Recently there has been a lot of discussion in the media about Britney Spears' younder sister, Jamie Lynn, getting pregnent at just sixteen years old. A large amount of the discussion is about the fact that Jamie Lynn has a television show on Nickelodion, a network with a fan base consisting of elementary and middle school children. Should Miss Spears be fired from her show because of the example she would be setting for the viewers? I believe that Jamie Lynn should not be fired from the show. Obviously parents to do not want their children watching a show with a pregnent teenager as the main character so to have Jamie Lynn do the show during her pregnency is out of the question. A probationary period with the show on hiatus seems like the best solution to this problem. Or, if that is not enough for parents, a spin off of Jamie Lynn's show could be created in which she also appears at least periodically if not regurally. Everyone makes mistakes and had Jamie Lynn not been a celebrity the fact that she was sixteen and pregnent would not be such a big deal. In my educational career girls started getting pregnent at the mere age of twelve. A person should not be judged on the mistakes he/she has made but on the way he/she reacts and in a sense recovers from them.

Today at work I found out about the suicide of one of my favorite actors, Heath Ledger. The news made me wonder about all suicide victims and what makes them want to kill themselves. My only theory in the case of Heath Ledger is that his relationship with Michelle Williams is now over and he was devastated to the point of suicide. I wonder, if this was the case, why he did not just choose to talk to someone about what he was feeling. I wonder why anyone chooses not to talk about what they are feeling. Does death really seem like a better alternative? In my experience, when you feel like the worst thing to ever happen has happened and you are depressed and angry, there is always someone who is worse off then you are and you are better to look at the bright side of the situation. Obviously when you are depressed there does not seem like a bright side to the situation and death can seem like the only option. I wonder if suicide victims really look at all of the consequences of their actions or just the ones that seem most appealing to them. Heath Ledger has a two year old daughter who now has to grow up with out a father. Did he think about this before hand and decided that the situation would still be better off when he was dead, or did he not think of this at all? I have never been suicidal and therefore cannot comprehend when could be going through someone’s head who is suicidal but I do know that killing yourself never solves anything and I feel sorry for all of the people close to Heath Ledger who now must live on without him.

I love being a student at BYU and feel very fortunate to be here. It made me think of my mom who grew up in Scotland and did not have this opportunity. She and my grandparents are converts to the church and joined when my mom was eight years old. They joined the church in Dundee, Scotland and since there was not a church building at that time, they were baptized in a small local pool. There were nine youth in her ward six girls and three boys. My mom was the only member in the church in her entire school from kindergarten all the way through high school. Growing up she had many opportunities that we will never have, she became Sunday school secretary when she was thirteen, young women’s president at nineteen, and a member of the stake Relief Society board when she was twenty four. It was difficult for her and her friends to find young men to date who were members of the church but my mom knew she would settle for nothing less than a temple marriage. The closest temple for members in Scotland to attend was in London, England. Members of her ward would lease a bus and drive through the night arriving early on a Saturday morning. They would work in the temple all day and start their journey home around 5:00 AM Sunday morning. Sunday school, relief society, and priesthood were all held on the bus on the way home. Although many parts of her story are similar to parts of my youth I know that having the opportunity to go to a University were the majority of the students are Latter Day Saints has helped maintain my testimony in a way that my mother was not as fortunate. Her story does have a happy ending because in her mid to late twenties she met my dad and they were married in the Salt Lake City temple.

Thesis: Buying Smashbox makeup will not only make you look good but it will help the earth as well.
Audience: Female, wears makeup, eco-friendly, wants improve physical appearance.
The argument is made by appealing to your insecurities and saying that if you wear this makeup you will no longer have those physical flaws. The beautiful model that takes up the majority of the page makes the audience think that they too could look like that if they had this particular makeup. The argument is also made by telling the audience that for every purchase they make a tree will be planted in a developing country by a credible organization called Trees for the Future.
I would say that to the target audience for this advertisement that the argument would work. Women can be easily influenced by a model especially when they feel they have flaws to cover up. Someone who wanted to wear makeup but is afraid of the the damaging effects to the environment with the materials used for the packaging or other parts of the makeup would feel better about buying this particular brand because a tree will be planted in its place.
